Demeter and Alice Kalinoff House

This stately house was built in 1913 for Dr. Demeter and Alice Kalinoff and replaced a circa 1870s house that was built on this lot for Fred Pennington, part owner of the Sauntry, Pennington & Co. Constructed by Frank Linner & Co. for an estimated cost of $5,000, the present two-and-a-half-story, frame residence features both a limestone block foundation under the original portion of the home and a rock-faced, concrete block foundation under a recent addition; one-over-one double-hung windows; clapboard siding; a full-width front porch; and a flared hip roof with prominent lower cross gables on the front and side elevations. The house features a mixture of Victorian, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman details that were popular styles when the house was built. The massive brick chimney with corbeled cap and polygonal bay on the south elevation reflect Victorian influences. The wide eaves with corbels (decorative brackets), the semi-circular window in the front gable, and Classical piers resting on concrete block piers on the front porch are all Colonial Revival details. The tapered piers on the porch reflect a Craftsman style influence. A 2007/08, two-story, hipped roof addition was added to the rear of the house and respects the design, scale, and materials of the original building. As mentioned above, Dr. Demeter and Alice Kalinoff were the first owners of this home. According to the 1917 city directory, Demeter Kalinoff was a physician and surgeon with an office located at 308 East Chestnut Street. Mr. and Mrs. Kalinoff raised four children in this house—Frederick, Helen, Naidena, and Vacil. After Demeter Kalinoff’s death in the early 1950s, his wife, Alice, and their children continued to live in this house. In more recent times, a new, three-car garage with a hip roof has been constructed behind the house.
