Holcombe Neighborhood

The Holcombe neighborhood was one of the first additions to Stillwater beyond the "original town." The neighborhood was platted by William Holcombe, who built his own home at the west end of the neighborhood on the shores of Lily Lake. Holcombe was later mayor of Stillwater and the first lieutenant governor of Minnesota. By the time of the Civil War, the neighborhood contained more than 75 homes and 300 residents. Most of the original homes were modest in size, and replaced by larger homes starting in the 1870s. A few of the pre-Civil War homes still exist, however. For many modern residents, the neighborhood's most notable landmark is Washington Square Park, which was located across from William Holcombe's own house and continues to serve Stillwater residents more than 170 years later.
