Historic Stillwater, Minnesota Building Permits

Stillwater building permits were issued starting in 1886. The applications can provide detailed information on structures constructed after that time.

Building permits from 1886 to 1944 have been digitized and may be found online in the Minnesota Digital Library. Permits for 1886 to 1945 are also microfilmed and available at the Stillwater Public Library. Permits for later dates are at Stillwater City Hall.

Here's how to search:

  1. Use the link above to easily access the building permit collection.
  2. On the digital library site, use the search field at the top of the screen to narrow your search by an individual name (e.g. owner, builder, architect), street name, or portion of a legal description.

Note that street addresses changed slightly over the years, so try searching for variations on the information you have. Legal descriptions are often, but not always, included in the record description.

(The Stillwater Public Library's St. Croix Collection also contains a binder with various indexes to the building permits. This index was created by staff and volunteers before the building permits were available online, and is a valuable alternative way to search.)
